QR codes include redundancy so they can be read even if partially damaged. Higher error correction means more reliability but a denser code:
Use our free QR code generator — paste your URL or text, customize the size and error correction level, then click Generate. Your QR code is created instantly in your browser. Download it as PNG or SVG to use in print materials, presentations, or digital content. No signup required.
QR codes can encode URLs, plain text, email addresses, phone numbers, SMS messages, WiFi credentials (SSID and password), vCards for contacts, and geographic coordinates. Most smartphones can scan QR codes directly with their camera app without needing a separate scanner.
On iPhone, open the Camera app and point it at the QR code. On Android, open the Camera app or Google Lens. A link or prompt will appear — tap it to open. Some Android phones need QR scanning enabled in camera settings first. No special app needed on modern devices.
Error correction allows a QR code to be scanned even if part of it is damaged or obscured. There are four levels: L (7% recovery), M (15%), Q (25%), and H (30%). Higher error correction makes the QR code more robust but also larger and denser. Use H for printed materials.
QR codes can store up to 7,089 numeric characters, 4,296 alphanumeric characters, or 2,953 bytes of binary data. For URLs, keep them under 200 characters for the best scan reliability. Shorter URLs produce simpler QR codes that scan faster and more reliably across all devices.
